The second day of the pledging conference on Afghanistan took place today in Geneva and virtually worldwide. The outcome of the conference saw donor countries pledge $3 billion in development aid to Afghanistan for 2021, totalling $12 billion over the next 4 years (2021/2024).
The pledging conference on Afghanistan starts on November 23rd. The conference aims at planning international aid for Afghanistan for the next 4 years and it is of crucial importance for the future of the country. The events scheduled can be watched live or recorded through the UN Web TV.
The event helped raise awareness on the crisis of education and child protection in Afghanistan, including progress since 2001 and remaining challenges. Speakers highlighted comprehensive recommendations including on ensuring girls’ access to education, responding to attacks on education, scaling up community-based education – and the need for an increase in sustainable multi-year funding for education and child protection. Children represent the single greatest assets to achieve peace, recovery and prosperity for Afghanistan. A failure to invest adequately in the protection and rights of all children in Afghanistan, including quality education, will undermine any effort for sustained change.
