{"id":65,"date":"2018-03-22T08:03:56","date_gmt":"2018-03-22T07:03:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.action-for-development.org\/2018\/?p=65"},"modified":"2023-06-28T20:59:51","modified_gmt":"2023-06-28T18:59:51","slug":"rahyab-school-for-disabled-children","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/actfordev.org\/french\/rahyab-school-for-disabled-children\/","title":{"rendered":"L\u2019ECOLE RAHYAB POUR LES ENFANTS EN HANDICAP"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;578&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;577&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221;][vc_column_text el_class=&#8221;bloc_blue&#8221;]<span class=\"plusgrand\">Rahyab School for Disabled Children<\/span><br \/>\nLocation &#8211; Kabul<br \/>\nFocus &#8211; Education[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text]<strong>A report issued by Handicap International in 2005 stated that about 200,000 children in Afghanistan are affected by at least one type of disability (physical, sensorial or mental). 75 percent of these children do not attend school.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2004, two staff teachers and six volunteers (themselves with physical disabilities) decided to gather children with disabilities to teach them sign language, basic literacy and numeracy skills. What started as a community-based initiative has developed into the Rahyab School (Persian for \u2018finding one\u2019s way\u2019) and now welcomes around 450 children every day, with 40% of them being girls.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2013 community members donated land and equipment for the construction of a school building.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, the school provides basic education, food and transportation for blind, deaf and\/or speech impaired boys and girls from very poor families in Kabul. Since 2011, AfD has provided operational and advocacy support, although our main role is providing the children with lunch every day. Nutrition remains our priority since most students\u2019 parents often struggle to feed their large families.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The school\u2019s curriculum is specifically designed to provide children the necessary skills that will help them cope with their disabilities, such as braille and sign language. The children also learn a wide variety of vocational skills, including IT, music, sewing, waiter training or bicycle repairing. The school also provides psychological therapy to help the children overcome trauma.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The school currently employs 33 specially trained teachers, many of whom are themselves disabled and thus understand the special needs of the children.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Former students have found jobs in various areas such as hotels, tailoring businesses and technicians in electronic shops. Some of them have become teachers at the Rayhab School themselves.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AfD plans on developing strategic partnerships with private businesses, NGOs and government agencies in Afghanistan to introduce the school\u2019s graduates as prospective employees.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Afghan children face hardship on many levels, but disabled children are confronted with additional barriers, such as social stigma and isolation from the community. It is believed that 1 in 20 Afghan children today live with disabilities, either congenital or as a consequence of the ongoing war.
